Air Fryer Grilled Cheese (View Print Version)

Quickly crafted golden-brown sandwich with melted cheddar, crisped to perfection using the air fryer.

# What You'll Need:

→ Bread

01 - 4 slices white or whole wheat sandwich bread

→ Cheese

02 - 4 slices cheddar cheese or preferred melting cheese

→ Spread

03 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

# Method:

01 - Preheat the air fryer to 350°F for 3 minutes.
02 - Spread softened butter evenly on one side of each bread slice.
03 - Place two slices of bread, buttered side down, on a clean surface and layer each with two slices of cheese. Top with remaining bread slices, buttered side up.
04 - Place sandwiches in the air fryer basket without overlapping and air fry for 4 minutes.
05 - Carefully flip each sandwich and air fry for an additional 3 to 4 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
06 - Remove sandwiches from the air fryer, allow to cool slightly, slice, and serve immediately.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • The air fryer does all the work while you do literally nothing—no hovering, no flipping a thousand times.
  • You get crispy edges and gooey cheese at the same time, which is harder to pull off than it sounds.
  • It's ready in under 15 minutes, which means you can make it on a weeknight without breaking a sweat.
02 -
  • Don't skip the preheat step; a cold basket steams the bread instead of crisping it, and that's the opposite of what you want.
  • The flip is crucial—it's what gives you those crispy, golden edges on both sides instead of one sad, pale side.
03 -
  • Keep the basket clean and dry before each batch—any moisture will create steam, and steam is the enemy of crispiness.
  • If you're doubling the recipe, resist the urge to stack sandwiches; they need breathing room in the basket to turn out right.
